Noh Bo Academy is a Christian, Karen speaking, “day” and boarding school for approx. 200 students over the age of 11, offering 7 years of education. It is supported by Christ Church Bangkok, the only English-speaking Anglican Church in Thailand. Noh Bo Academdy is situated 800k north-west from Bangkok on the beautiful mountainous Thai – Burmese Border, approximately 110K north of the city of Mai Sot in Western Thailand. Local teachers are employed to teach the usual school subjects plus Skaw Karen, Thai, Burmese and English – 4 languages with 4 different scripts. All are used and useful for life in this area.
Native English speaking Christian volunteers are used to teach English within the school, using a prepared English syllabus in line with international TELF guidelines. This complements what is taught by the local teachers. Volunteers are also encouraged to live out their Christian faith practically and to teach from the Bible in assemblies and group meetings. We love having teams from around the world come and volunteer, teach English to our students and engage with our students one-on-one in their daily lives in the village.
The campus, which is in/on the edge of a rural Thai village, is a large flat area, edged on all sides by the school buildings. These are a mixture of traditional split bamboo, wood, adobe and breeze block buildings for teaching, accommodation for boarding students, some teachers and their families, and a large hut where volunteers live. The buildings surround the football pitch, volleyball and cane ball courts. All are well used as both boys and girls love sports. Fruit and vegetable are also grown on the campus and chickens provide the school with eggs.
Animist, Buddhist, Christian and those of no faith are all accepted, some from local Thai villages, some from refugee camps, and some from many parts of Burma/ Myanmar, the latter having been involved in a civil war from 1948, which is the longest running civil war in the world. NBA stands as a Christian witness in the area, which is a huge responsibility. All parents and students know that Christian principles are upheld and there is regular Bible teaching. Some come to a living Christian faith of their own.
A number of students, teachers and their families have had very difficult lives in the past. Teams can help by sharing the love of Jesus with the students and encourage them in their daily faith journey. At NBA the students are nurtured, taught and prepared to go on to lead useful lives in many areas within their own people group and far beyond. Would you prayerfully consider coming and serving alongside us here at the Noh Bo Academy? We would love to have you with us!
